While reading about the FN 1900 barrel service tool on https://thegreatmodel8.net/ , it struck me that this tool should be recreated for the owners of Model 8 and 81 Remingtons to ease their servicing. This tool is a functional piece of history - a convenient disassembly / reassembly tool for collectors and gunsmiths alike. Original F.N. tools from the early 20th century are extremely rare and almost unheard of; reference to one below in a private collection is all that can be found online.
Through my research to date, it appears Remington did not offer a similar tool to compete with F.N. They only offered a spanner-type wrench, which doesn't hold the springs, barrel nut washer, and barrel nut together as you are reassembling the recoil action. The top left picture below is straight from the Model 8 manual. If you have never had one of these rifles apart, this is an excellent image of the recoil assembly action inside the barrel.
Originally, the main goal was to simply replicate this tool for the Model 8 and 81. After some initial testing, we decided to slightly modify the original tool design and give it a bit more visual appeal along with a sturdy weighted feel in your hand. Though the function of the tool is to ease manual service labor, we believe it should also be something that you're excited to show off as part of your collection of model 8's and/or 81's.
Please keep in mind that these firearms were made back in 1906 -1950 depending on your model. The machining tolerances of these parts could have changed ever so slightly during those years of production. While we can’t test all 127,000+ rifles that were made, if the Main Body of the service tool does not fit over the Barrel Nut Cap or the lugs do not fit into the Barrel Bushing slots, contact us and we will work with you to make adjustments for your specific barrel issue.
